Seminar-John Muir & the Giant Sequoias
May 7, 2022 @ 10:00 am – 12:00 pm

Seminar Present by Michael Wurtz
Treewise and Sequoical: John Muir and Giant Sequoia
Naturalist John Muir may have come to California in 1868 to see the Giant Sequoia – the most massive trees in the world. In his early years he reveled among the groves. Then he studied them. Then he saw the need to preserve the Big Trees and visited the Calaveras grove three times – in 1876, 1899, and 1900.
Mike Wurtz, Head of Special Collections and Muir Curator at the University of the Pacific, will present a slide show of original photographs, letters, and drawings documenting Muir’s relationship to this massive Sierra tree.
